Sweet Honey in the Rock Tuesday, March 25, 2008 7:30 PM All Tickets $35 Rooted in a deeply held commitment to create music of out the rich textures of African American legacy and traditions, Sweet Honey in the Rock possesses a stunning vocal prowess that captures the complex sounds of Blues, spirituals, traditional gospel hymns, rap, reggae, African chants, Hip Hot, ancient lullabies, and jazz improvisation. Sweet Honey's collective voice, occasionally accompanied by hand percussion instruments, produces a sound filled with soulful harmonies and intricate rhythms.
Omar Sosa Afreecanos Quartet April 6, 2008 7pm $25, Students $10 Omar Sosa is a musician extraordinaire composer, arranger, pianist, percussionist, improvisatore, communicator. His Afro-Cuban based mix of jazz and world music is broadly expressive – full of power and passion, subtlety and grace. Omar draws from each culture he touches the energy and storytelling of hip-hop, the free-spirited experimentation of jazz, the heartfelt emotion of an Afro-Ecuadorian choir, the sensuality of popular Cuban music, the hypnotic trance of Gnawa ritual. The result is a modern, urban music with a Latin jazz heart.
